Elon Winter Term Study Abroad Course:
This course is designed for Elon students to experience the Ghanaian performing arts which includes dance, music and drama (story telling) while they gain an appreciation for the country’s rich past history. Students will learn the meaning of dances and movement and have the opportunity to perform them in the community, interact, learn, experience and perform contemporary and some traditional West African dance forms/styles, traditional songs, musical instruments. Students will also learn about the tragic Atlantic slave trade and the challenges facing Africa today. The course will integrate classes and performances with collaboration with Ghanaian based Dance Company (Africa Alive Dance Company) in dance, music and poetry. Students will visit and perform with the Company in some of the ten Regions in Ghana, these includes Sunyani- Brong Ahafo Region, Cape Coast - Central Region, Koforidua - Eastern Region, Greater Accra and Kumasi - Ashanti Region for performances in the communities. Students will have the opportunity for family visits in the rural village community of Prampam, and this will provide students with the opportunities to learn about people’s daily lives and activities and how that relates to the generation of movements, traditional songs and musical rhythm/instruments. |
